Gansu Province's New Energy Storage Capacity Has Surpassed 6.5 Million Kilowatts
On September 19, it was learned from the State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company that the installed capacity of new energy storage in Gansu has exceeded 6.5 million kilowatts, reaching 6.5948 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 72%. The maximum charging power of energy storage is 3.62 million kilowatts, and the maximum discharging power is 3.91 million kilowatts, equivalent to the regulation capacity provided by ten 300,000-kilowatt coal-fired generating units. The daily"one charge and one discharge" of energy storage has become the norm, with"two charges and two discharges" achievable during certain periods. From January to August this year, the average utilization hours of energy storage reached 930 hours, ranking sixth nationwide. The role of large-scale energy storage in ensuring power supply, stabilizing consumption, and promoting transformation has been continuously strengthened.
Since the beginning of this year, State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company has actively served and supported the high-quality development of new energy storage by deepening energy storage’s participation in the electricity market and dispatching operations. The company has taken multiple measures to enhance the grid's absorption capacity, including the development and deployment of the"e-connection" one-stop grid connection service platform. This platform enables online, unified processing of all grid connection procedures, reducing business processing time by more than 70%. Additionally, China's first coordinated control system for new energy storage has been established. It operates in coordination with the new energy active power control system to achieve adaptive and precise regulation of both new energy generation commands and energy storage charging commands, thereby maximizing new energy absorption. So far this year, a total of 2,273 precise energy storage regulation tasks have been completed.
It is widely recognized that"new energy + energy storage" can effectively address the fluctuations in power output from wind and solar energy, improve the utilization rate of new energy sources, enhance the safety of grid integration, and support the stable and secure operation of power systems, thereby promoting the high-quality development of new energy. It has become one of the key enablers in building a new type of power system. Currently, with the rapid expansion of new energy energy storage capacity across the province, the energy storage configuration model has evolved from self-built storage to diversified models such as centralized co-construction and leasing. The development of new energy energy storage configurations is thus showing a trend toward diversification. Among the new energy energy storage projects under construction, in addition to thermal energy storage—represented by solar thermal energy—there are also mechanical energy storage technologies such as compressed air and gravitational energy storage, as well as chemical energy storage, exemplified by hydrogen energy storage.
Since the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan period, new energy storage in Gansu Province has developed rapidly in coordination with new energy. State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company, leveraging the province's resource, location, and transmission corridor advantages, has responded promptly and efficiently to the grid connection requirements of new energy projects, strengthened the construction of the power source grid connection service system, and made every effort to support the development and utilization of new energy within the province. As of the end of August 2023, there were 207 operational electrochemical energy storage projects in Gansu Province, with a total capacity of 6.5948 million kilowatts. Among them, there were 15 grid-side energy storage projects with a capacity of 1.7175 million kilowatts, and 192 power source-side energy storage projects with a capacity of 4.8773 million kilowatts.
