It is reported by the State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company that on March 24, in Qin’an County, Tianshui City, Gansu Province, the final set of conductors was successfully installed, completing the entire Line Section 3 of the Gansu segment of the ±800 kV ultra-high-voltage direct-current (UHVDC) power transmission project from Gansu to Zhejiang (referred to as the“Gansu-to-Zhejiang Power Transmission Project”). This marks the first of the 22 construction sections across six provinces along the entire project that has achieved full-line energization.

“The Gansu-to-Zhejiang Power Transmission Project” is a key initiative under the national“West-to-East Power Transmission” strategy. It represents a critical step toward accelerating the development of large-scale wind and photovoltaic power bases in desert and Gobi regions and building a modern power system. Moreover, it is China’s first cross-regional ultra-high-voltage (UHV) DC transmission project to employ flexible DC transmission technology at both the sending and receiving ends. The transmission line originates in Wuwei, Gansu Province, and terminates in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, traversing six provincial-level administrative regions—Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui, and Zhejiang—with a total length of 2,370 kilometers. Of this, the Gansu section spans 494 kilometers. Recently completed Line Section 3 in Gansu covers 115 kilometers, accounting for approximately 23% of the Gansu section and 4.9% of the entire line length.

Li Xiangqun, a Level-3 staff member of the Grid Construction Department of State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company, said,“The Gan-3 section line—the first to be energized this time—has a total length of 115 kilometers. The line traverses predominantly mountainous and hilly terrain, characterized by complex topography and landforms. Self-weight collapsible loess geology is widely distributed along the route, and numerous crossings (including over roads, railways, and other power lines) further increase construction difficulty. To address the diverse terrain challenges, we deployed specialized equipment—including all-terrain cranes and crawler transporters—to achieve fully mechanized construction across all terrains, all sections, and all construction phases. This approach shortened the construction schedule and enabled the Gan-3 section to be energized first.”

The Gansu-to-Zhejiang Power Transmission Project is expected to be ready for live commissioning by the end of 2026. Upon completion and operation, it will transmit more than 36 billion kWh of electricity to Zhejiang annually, facilitate the consumption of over 21 billion kWh of new-energy electricity, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 17 million tons. This project holds great significance for leveraging Gansu’s energy resource advantages, meeting Zhejiang’s growing electricity demand, ensuring national energy security, and promoting both energy structure optimization and ecological civilization construction.
